This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere. My 3rd-grade class is in a high-need, low-income public school, nestled in the heart of Southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.

Each child in my classroom is a unique learner who comes to school each day ready to achieve at the highest levels.

As a teacher, it is my job to make sure the students have access to the materials they need, at all times, as well as use those materials in a way that will facilitate higher learning and achievement.

My Project

Teaching essential math, science, writing, and art standards virtually has been a challenge. While these are all vital skills, they can present as somewhat dull over the computer. So, as the teacher, I find myself looking for any way possible to keep the kids engaged.

Using Oreo cookies to teach math, science, writing, and art is the perfect way to keep the kids engaged and learning!

Using a full day's worth of lessons, the students will take the Oreos and conduct a science experiment on Oreo stacking. They will then use the class data to figure averages, median, mode, and using line plots. Kids will then create a free standing sculpture with the cookie filling and wafers, writing a narrative about the sculpture afterwards. The kids will be involved in a great deal of learning with the cookies that they love so much. It is an experience they are sure to remember a lifetime.
