Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in an impoverished area of South Los Angeles. All of my students come from low-income families. We are a Title I school where ninety-nine percent of our students receive free meals. My students always try their best at everything and anything, despite the challenges that they face in their daily lives.

They are already not expected to have it as easy as others, but we learn that with hard work and consistency, they can be "unique" or different from the rest.

My students are so eager to learn that it makes coming to work easy!

My Project

I want to take my students in a time machine to make friends with multicultural world changers from history, with the hope that they become world changers too!

Dr. Seuss said it best: "The more you read, the more you'll know.

The more you know, the more places you'll go!"

Looking deeper into the lives of ordinary citizens who have changed the world will impact my students' ability to see how one person can make a difference.

Brad Meltzer's "I am..." biographies will introduce these world changers to my students through a graphic novel format they can easily comprehend and engage in conversations about. They will be writing informational paragraphs with these books, as well as researching the timelines of these people.

I hope that this project will engage even the most disinterested students in my multicultural class when they meet someone from history who is a lot like them!
