My Project

In a world saturated with devices and apps, the ability to pick up and sit back down with a good book is often a privilege for most students. This lack of opportunity not only results in drastically lower rates of literacy, but also robs students of the love for reading. As a former non-reader myself, I know the power one great book can have on a student. It can turn them into a reader. It can show them that they can.

The books included in this project have been curated by my students themselves.

Some students chose YA fiction. Some chose contemporary fiction or classics , some - graphic novels. Regardless of the genre, these were the books that appealed to my students in some way - the first key in the endeavor to unlock their inner reader.

Physical books are a privilege; one that is often only reserved for those who can afford it. It saddens me to see the closing of bookstores, but it troubles me to see public school libraries understocked (often stocked with severely outdated material) and used for purposes other than their primary mission: promoting literacy. While a classroom library is modest - at best - I firmly believe my students deserve a place to peruse, choose, and sit down with a good read.
