My Project
Students with disabilities often are limited in their interests and job prospects. As a teacher for more than 20 years I have seen students come in and be given potential post secondary jobs of "store clerk" or "greeter". Although these are great fits typically, I've always felt that we should give students the skills and the passion to pursue more. In order to do this I must expand their horizons and increase their job skills, for the students in my class that starts with things we often take for granted such as: sitting patiently, active listening, endurance during physical activities, sight word identification. following multi-step directions, coping with stress and building confidence. For example, we work with sight word identification to help students with essential skills for job hunting like filling out applications. We also create crafts that require students to follow multi-step directions and cope with stress which will be an essential skill for any job.
These materials would help create lessons that build on these skills and help students to position themselves for jobs that align with their newfound skills and passions.
