My students attend our largest middle school, which is now just shy of 1,000. We have a diverse population, both in regards to race and socioeconomic background. A variety of engaging strategies are used to provide our sixth through eighth graders with differentiated instruction and integrated learning experiences. Our inclusion model features special education teachers co-teaching lessons with content area teachers. The focus of our middle school is on academic excellence, but our arts and athletic programs also thrive. Plus, we find ways to have fun and celebrate accomplishments!
This is the most awesome group of middle-schoolers that I have interacted with in my career.
They have good hearts and take pride in their school. Overall, they support each other, abide by a dress-code policy, and aspire to attend college. Interests include technology, games, and dance parties! These are the type of students who will pop into my Media Center to say hello, ask me how my day is going, and if they can do anything to help. Plus, they will tell me their life stories in exchange for a Jolly Rancher! They are full of energy, personality, and enthusiasm for life, which makes my job a joy.
My Project
Many of my students are avid readers of books by Alan Gratz, especially his fiction focusing on history and sports. His titles have been the top-sellers at both of my book fairs this year, the waiting list for several are now in the double digits, and every single Alan Gratz book I have is checked out! I would love to keep this passion for reading going! Plus, they're learning and getting interested in different time periods and cultures. What's not to love?!
I would like to treat my students to the opportunity to meet New York Times best-selling author, Alan Gratz, in person!
They would benefit from experiencing his presentation and will be able to relate to it on several levels. This kind of opportunity has never been available to them before due to budget constraints. I will be splitting the cost of this author visit with another school, plus my principal agreed to pay a portion of the fees. The amount that I am asking for is the remaining balance that I am responsible for to make this a reality in May of this year. Please help me inspire my students to read, write, and dream big!
