This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Now more than ever, the safety of our students is critical to our education system. Schools not only must teach our children, but also guarantee their safety. However as we have seen in recent events this task of safety has become more and more difficult when strangers can walk into our schools and open fire on our innocent learners .
Between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2016 In total, there were 952 children with autism reported missing to NCMEC during this ten year period.
These 952 children were involved in a total of 1,067 missing incidents.
Our students with autism can be a very vulnerable. Many lack the fine and gross motor skills to physically navigate their environments safely and avoid becoming lost. Also most of our students are non-verbal, thus they are unable to communicate help when in trouble. When you combine all these disadvantages in buldings shared between mutiple schools, and in one of the most overpopulated cities in the country keeping our students safe becomes a daily struggle.
We as a school community would like to build a student ID system to help keep our students across all our seven school sites (K-12) “found” in and outside of the school building. IDs will be printed with student and school information and a QR code that can be scanned to access even more student specific information such as contact info and allergies. Students will also have the opportunity to learn the different parts of their ID in the classroom and how to use them to communicate when they need support. This will help increase each student’s adaptive learning skills and independence.
