This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Significant cognitive delays, Emotional disturbances, Sensory impairments, and Multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.
Between all of our sites we have about 50 students who currently live in temporary housing.
Despite their circumstances, these students are in school every day ready to take on the challenges. However, they need more support than others. Homelessness and food scarcity can have a severe negative impact on a student’s social-emotional well-being, mental health, and academic achievement. Every day, New York City’s homelessness crisis plays out in classrooms around the city, where thousands of students struggle to keep up in school while dealing with the trauma of not having stable housing and enough food to eat.
To me our students are superheroes! Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle.
My Project
Sometimes the solution to improving student success can be as simple as a hot meal. One of the most devastating effects of COVID-19 has been the sheer number of people it has left without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. Even prior to the pandemic, Feeding America estimated about 11.1% of New York State residents and 16.9% of children experienced food insecurity, meaning they at times lacked access to enough food for an active, healthy life .
As a result about one in five children in the Bronx and Brooklyn experienced food insecurity, compared to about one in seven children in Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.
Our school employs a PBIS program called “PRIDE” (practice safety, respect, in location, Do the responsible thing, and engage in learning). Students are earning points throughout the day as they follow PRIDE. As students points build they will reach different tiers of awards and prizes (i.e sensory toys, slime, art supplies). Our hope is with a gift card to Domino's restaurant as another possible award for great behavior, attendance and following PRIDE, we can improve those statistics if even just by a little within our school community here in the South Bronx.
When a student earns a domino’s gift card they will have the opportunity to sit with me and learn how to place a food order on Domino's website. An awesome skill that will promote independence and student advocacy. Students will be able to choose what they want to eat and how they want it made. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs considered physiological needs the MOST important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs are met. Our students are already homeless, they don’t need the worry of not knowing when they will have their next meal.
