Operation Gamma

Help me give my students solid source 1 inch disc beta and gamma radiation emitters. These items, radioactive cesium and thorium will be used in a "cloud chamber" in conjunction with a Geiger counter in a lab.

My Students

My students reside in a mostly rural area south of St Louis. They have common interests in agriculture and sports like most middle school kids but project-based learning has invested many of my students in their education more than any other subject. Basic items like an egg drop, atomic model, and other common labs cause them to work harder than they had in years past. I want to capitalize on this momentum.

I've seen my students really embrace science with our phenomenon based labs and projects; this is visible in increased academic scores and reduced truancy.

This year we will have our students speak with astronauts aboard the ISS. This superb event combined with other hands-on projects is proving to be a resounding successes. With our county struggling with poverty and terrible drugs like meth and heroin, keeping kids in school does more than just keep them safe, it also is reflected in a safer community.

The students have been eagerly anticipating the supplies provided by you. DonorsChoose is helping them stay involved and active in school.

My Project

Operation Gamma is a project to build a reusable "cloud chamber" for use by middle school students for observing radioactive particles as they leave a radiation source. The sources are validated as safe and this project will be in a controlled environment of a school lab. Students will also use a Geiger Counter to measure decay and the chamber will allow them to see the contrails of particles as they fire away from the radiation source. This lab has been executed the past two years with commercially purchased uranium ore which has low radioactivity and is not very dramatic. These sources are "hotter" and will last longer helping more students and saving effort and funds.
