This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Considering the struggles and socioeconomic disadvantages of my students, we do really well, every time, every year. My students are limited only by what they have access to, and I aim to give them access to more and more.

Language and storytelling are mankind's greatest inventions.

For the past ten years (now entering year eleven) I have had the pleasure of spending 180 hours with over 1,000 people in progress. I live in the place where I work and I cannot go anywhere without saying hello to someone I've taught. It won't be long until I'm teaching the sons and daughters of my previous students. My students are my community are my life.

My Project

This project is all about increasing access to works of literary merit. For the past ten years I have maintained a lending library inside my classroom. On display and available is a combination of my own books, what was in good condition and inexpensive from Goodwill stores, and retired novels from our campus library.

The lending library is my favorite educational trap.

I wait until students become curious enough to browse the books. I casually invite students to go to the shelf and read the backs of whatever looks good. If I catch a student looking too long, I offer them the book to take home until they're done, or they know for sure they are not interested. The offering of a gift, even a gift expected to be returned, is a powerful tool that helps me build positive teacher-student relationships.

The students return the book only to redirect toward other options they might enjoy. Every returning and borrowing is a conversation I get to have with a student about their interests and possibilities.

The three book sets I am requesting are high-frequency options on the AP Literature Free Response question. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man appears most often appearing 58.49% of the time. Joseph Heller's Catch-22 appears 16th most (28.3%), and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini appears 22nd most (25%).

If this project is successful I will continue to request other AP high-frequency novels and plays and serve my socioeconomically disadvantaged, but wonderfully diverse and diversely wonderful student population.
