This project is all about increasing access to works of literary merit. For the past ten years I have maintained a lending library inside my classroom. On display and available is a combination of my own books, what was in good condition and inexpensive from Goodwill stores, and retired novels from our campus library. The lending library is my favorite educational trap. I wait until students become curious enough to browse the books. I casually invite students to go to the shelf and read the backs of whatever looks good. If I catch a student looking too long, I offer them the book to take home until they're done, or they know for sure they are not interested. The offering of a gift, even a gift expected to be returned, is a powerful tool that helps me build positive teacher-student relationships. The students return the book only to redirect toward other options they might enjoy. Every returning and borrowing is a conversation I get to have with a student about their interests and possibilities. The three book sets I am requesting are high-frequency options on the AP Literature Free Response question. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man appears most often appearing 58.49% of the time. Joseph Heller's Catch-22 appears 16th most (28.3%), and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini appears 22nd most (25%). If this project is successful I will continue to request other AP high-frequency novels and plays and serve my socioeconomically disadvantaged, but wonderfully diverse and diversely wonderful student population.
