Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.
Between all of our sites we have about 50 students who currently live in temporary housing.
Homelessness can have a severe negative impact on a student’s social-emotional well-being, mental health and academic achievement. However, our scholars are supper motivated and eager to learn. Despite their circumstances, they are in school every day ready to take on the challenges.
My Project
Sometimes the solution to improving student success can be as simple as offering students essentials beyond the classroom. There are biological requirements for human survival, such as food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep. If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally.
The coronavirus has spread through urban areas like the Bronx faster than rural areas and has disproportionately affected African-American and Hispanic communities.
Those in temporary housing have been especially affected. With all requested items we hope to provide our students with a bag filled with everyday essentials such as soap, laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, and food. All of which can help our students and their families stay afloat a little bit easier. Most importantly we hope to try to keep our students focused on learning in school rather than on their struggles at home during this pandemic.
