My Students

I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Significant cognitive delays, Emotional disturbances, Sensory impairments, and Multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.

Between all of our sites we have about 50 students who currently live in temporary housing.

These scholars are so motivated and eager to learn. Despite their circumstances, they are in school every day ready to take on the challenges. However, they need more support than others. Homelessness can have a severe negative impact on a student’s social-emotional well-being, mental health and academic achievement. Homelessness has become a huge issue in New York City. Every day, New York City’s homelessness crisis plays out in classrooms around the city, where thousands of students struggle to keep up in school while dealing with the trauma of not having stable housing.

To me our students are superheroes! Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle standing in their way.

My Project

Sometimes the solution to improving student success can be as simple as offering students essentials beyond the classroom. The response to COVID-19 has impacted all of us in unprecedented ways. Among the drastic changes that have taken place, school closures have brought many uncertainties and concerns for our community. The coronavirus has spread through urban areas like the Bronx faster than rural areas and has disproportionately affected African-American and Hispanic communities. As a result of the challenges that arose out of this pandemic, we have discovered new ways to engage, connect with, and support students and families during this time of remote learning and social distancing we would never have thought possible. Therefore, providing my students with everyday essentials such as soap, shampoo and conditioner, body lotion, laundry detergent, and hand sanitizer is crucial to their basic needs.

We know that if students' basic needs are not met, it interferes with their learning.

There are biological requirements for human survival, such as food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep. If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs considered physiological needs the MOST important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs are met.

Invest in our students and the future of the Bronx. With your support we will be able to provide our students with the essentials to keep them healthy and safe.
