This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.

To me our students are superheroes!

Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle.

My Project

Sometimes the solution to improving student success can be as simple as offering essentials beyond the classroom. As students return back to the school building for summer we now face new challenges. Our pressing one at the moment is our students' ability to access water.

We know that if students' basic needs are not met, it interferes with their learning.

Drinking enough water is essential for physiological processes such as circulation, metabolism, and temperature regulations. Although excessive dehydration is associated with serious health problems, even mild dehydration can cause issues, including headaches, irritability, poorer physical performance, and reduced cognitive functioning.

When the pandemic hit, water fountains and other communal areas were shut down to protect everyone from the spread of COVID-19. Although we have come such a long way in the fight against this virus, school water fountains remain unsafe. With hot days approaching our students will need to stay hydrated. Our plan is to set up hydration zones around the school. Coolers with iced water will be placed in each established zone on our school floor where students can easily refill their personal water bottles or grab quick drink. This will help to assure that each student will have access to water wherever they are and at anytime. Fans will also be used to ensure a constant airflow in lunchroom, and other hot areas where our students gather. All to keep our kiddo's nice and cool.
