My students need an OpenROV for hands-on experience building, programming, and controlling a robot. We'll also use this for our ROV club and our Marine Bio class.

My Students
We know very little about goes one at the bottoms of our oceans. We have started an ROV Club as a way to introduce students to oceanography and robotics. 7th and 8th graders stay after school to design and build their own underwater robots which they then use to complete missions in a competition.
Our school is an urban school that has 7th through 12th grade.
Our students are bright, energetic, and love to learn. Last year we had over 30 students participating in our ROV Club. 2/3 of our students are low-income, so providing this enrichment opportunity to them is very important to us.
My Project
Students will use the OpenROV in ROV Club as a way to study the design of a well-functioning ROV and draw inspiration for their own designs. They will also use it to practice the various mission tasks.
In our engineering program, this system will enable us to give our engineering students a "hands-on" experience in controlling a service/observations platform in an environment that they would not otherwise encounter. It will be very effective in demonstrating the principles and dynamics of moving in fluids and will augment our ability to perform environmental observations and monitoring.
For Marine Biology, we hope to be able to take it to a nearby lake to investigate what lives at various depths and to collect samples to analyze later.
Our school's budget for this year has not yet "rolled over," so we have not yet been able to purchase any supplies for this year.
This OpenROV will be above and beyond anything we'd ever expect to get here, and it will be a truly unique experience for our students. Many of our students think of "scientist" as someone in a white lab coat in a room with no windows, but through ROV we want to expose them to some of the other career options available to them.
More than half of students from low‑income households
