My Students

Did you know there are an estimated 300,000 child soldiers around the world? That number isn't probably even accurate. I want my students to aware of what's happening in the world around them and be immersed in quality literature that will help them develop their views and opinions.

My students are intelligent and self-aware.

They are inquisitive and interested in what's going on around them. My school is in a diverse, low-income area, and offers 100% free lunch. My 8th graders are a wonderful group of children, whom I had the pleasure of teaching last year. They enjoy reading, but aren't always offered the kind of literature they would want to read. They are the type of students who trust me and will let me know what they want out of their education. Unfortunately, these things aren't always possible with the budget cuts and lack of funding in my school district. They also don't have parents who can readily afford to buy them books to read.

My Project

I would like to offer my students the choice in what they read for an expository unit on the worldwide use of child soldiers and the issue of genocide in history. I currently have 25 copies of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Child Soldier and would like to complete my set. I would also like to offer students the option of read First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers. The first memoir follows a boy's descent into becoming a soldier during the war in Sierra Leone. The latter book follows the story of a girl whose family is torn apart by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Both books tell unique, yet similar stories, from two different view points in two different locations and times. My students will not only be enriched by history, but will also learn to put their lives into perspective. They will work in small groups on whichever novel they chose.

History classes don't always get deep into some really important issues.

Genocide isn't going away anytime soon and many people are honestly unaware of what's happening around the world. I don't want my students to be those people. I want them to have an interest and maybe even become activists. Regardless, I want them to further appreciate their lives in learning about the struggles of the past and current history.
