Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In fifth grade, my dual language students continue learning using their first language and cementing the knowledge of their second language. I partner with another teacher and we are both dual language teachers. I teach language arts and social students while she teaches mathematics and science.
My students are very excited to learn each other's language.
They want to experience first hand as much as they can about this world. I am teaching in an urban setting and many students live in a trailer park or subsidized housing. I have other students who come from a middle-class or upper-middle-class neighborhood.
They are dual language students in a two-way program. That means that native Spanish-speaking students learn English while native English students learn Spanish. They learn from each other about language and culture.
Students also learn social emotional skills --they learn about their own feelings as well as others. It is important to develop social skills that will last them for a life-time.
My Project
My fifth graders are anxious to learn about the great big world! We have been fortunate to have several iPad minis donated to our class. iPads are great because they are hassle-free! They can be used at desks and on the floor. Kids read and research alone and with each other.
iPads are hot commodities in my classroom.
I would greatly appreciate having two additional iPads to enable more students to learn via technological apps. Students are able to take assessments through our district's learning portal. They are able to read and practice math. Kids find the iPads "cool" and "awesome".
Learning has been enhanced because of iPads. The world is opened for our fifth-grade dual language students. Abrimos el mundo para los alumnos!
