Opening the Mind to Exploration and Knowledge Through Words

Help me give my students the eye-opening tools, 3 different types of dictionaries, to help them explore the world of words and language.

My Students

I love my students because they all come to school with their own special talents. They also come to school with their own special set of circumstances. Many of them struggle with home situations, financial hardships, and social-emotional gaps. We work on a daily basis to be kind, show each other respect and give their very best each and every day. I love them because of their struggles and their successes.

We are a charter school whose mission is to guide students to excellence each and every day.

We do this despite the lack of public funding, as we receive only a small fraction of what traditional public schools receive per pupil. We do this, despite using hand-me-down furniture, books, and supplies. We do this because our school is located in a high-poverty area where the students and families send their children to us to exercise their rights as parents to have options in educating their children.

My students have many dreams & goals including, going to art school, being a fashion designer and joining the military.

My Project

These materials will give each student in my class the tools they need to deepen their knowledge of vocabulary and the English language. Dictionaries and thesauri are vital resources to teach students not only their alphabet but to help them grow their writing and research skills. I have found that most of my students do not know how to use printed dictionaries or reference books to assist them with their academic assignments. Having a whole-class set of these resources offers each student the equal opportunity to access knowledge. These books would an immense boost to my students and our classroom community.
