Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My goal is to create a Table Tennis team that competes in NYC's Public Schools Athletic League. I am requesting two regulation size table tennis tables (required for league competition), table tennis rackets, table tennis balls, training nets, and a training robot to provide my students with the best possible equipment to learn how to play the sport and play it well. At the moment, I am running a Table Tennis After School Club in which we use classroom tables pushed together to create makeshift table tennis tables with cheap retractable plastic nets stretched across. However, even with these limited resources, we have over 20 students in the club.
Donating to this project will provide many students from my school, the vast majority of which come from underserved communities, the opportunity to learn a new sport and learn valuable life skills that allow them to overcome obstacles and set themselves on a path to lead productive lives.
I strongly believe in the power of sports to enrich the lives of young people. In my experience, table tennis draws many students who don't participate in most other team sports, thus providing opportunities for students who would not otherwise consider themselves to be athletes.
Should students decide to participate competitively at the varsity level, or recreationally at the after school club level, playing table tennis will lead to improved physical, mental, and social outcomes.
