Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students think that the only thing waiting for them is work, drugs, or the streets. I teach 9th and 10th grade English in a low-income urban school, and nearly 100% of my students are from poor minority families. Most think they have nothing to offer the world, or they will be nothing when (or IF) they graduate. Most of my students do not consider college as an option. Most of my students do not consider good literature as an option, either.
At my school, novels are rare. Getting ready for college is even rarer. A hurdle to overcome is not having novels that are challenging yet interesting enough in order to inspire my students to read and learn more difficult vocabulary that they will need in college and the workplace.
To get my students college ready, they need to read modern, well-written novels that show them what good writing and good story telling looks like. "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, has the vocabulary, the interest level, and the style that will pull my students out of their own tough situations and motivate them to be more than they currently are. Through this powerful story, my students will increase their vocabulary, analyze writing style, and will be able to dialog with each other about deep, meaningful themes. It will prepare them for the SAT test and will build the foundation for College and Career Readiness by exposing them to modern pieces of excellent writing.
Through your generosity, my students will be able to move past their own limited vocabulary. With your help, my students will break their own cultural and social barriers. With your donation, my students will move beyond their narrow mindsets that tell them "they are not good enough for college; they can not possibly read anything that is academic or thought-provoking." For many students, his project, this novel, will be the first step, and for many, an eye-opening experience into the world of literature. Through your generosity, my students will succeed.
