Opening Minds through Graphic Novels: Building Literacy for English Learners

Help me give my students a collection of high-interest graphic novels that support language acquisition. Graphic novels combine images with text in a way that helps ELL students decode meaning, infer context, and stay engaged with stories.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious, hard-working, and full of potential. Many of them are recent arrivals to the United States and are learning English for the first time. As Newcomers and English Language Learners (ELLs), they face the dual challenge of adapting to a new culture while learning academic content in a new language. Despite these obstacles, they come to school every day eager to learn and connect.

This project will provide my classroom with a collection of high-interest graphic novels that support language acquisition and reading comprehension for English Learners.

Graphic novels combine images with text in a way that helps ELL students decode meaning, infer context, and stay engaged with stories even when they’re still learning the language.

Titles like New Kid, Amulet, El Deafo, and When Stars Are Scattered provide visual context that helps students grasp new vocabulary and follow complex plots. These books also reflect diverse cultures and experiences, which allows my students to see themselves in the stories and fosters a sense of belonging.

With these graphic novels, my students will be able to access literature more independently, develop critical reading skills, and gain the confidence to engage in class discussions and written responses.
