This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine yourself on a team that is competing with another team. It is possible for both teams to win, but the teams have to reach the same goal. However, the opposing team has access to materials, support and resources that are not available for your team. How would you feel?

My students are just like any other teenager, they work hard, they goof off, they talk, they sit quietly, they make good choices, they make poor choices, they fall in love and they experience heartbreak.

The only difference is that due to the family they were born into, they are predominantly poor, come from broken homes and lack the resources and support that are frequently found in more affluent districts (my high school has about 90% free or reduced lunch). They have dreams and they want to be successful but they have a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to do so.

My Project

I am requesting graphing calculators for my classroom so that my math students can use them to explore and better understand higher level algebra and geometry concepts. Our high school has a goal that every junior will take the ACT. According to the ACT, a student should make a minimum of 22 out of 36 on the math portion in order to be considered college ready. If the students are going to achieve this goal they must know the material and have the skills to use a calculator effectively. (The math portion of the test is 60 questions long and has a time limit of 60 minutes). If my students do not understand how to use the calculator to graph, read tables, solve matrices, etc, they are at a severe disadvantage.

When I was young if you had a high school diploma you could usually find employment and if you had a college diploma, you could almost certainly find employment in the field of your choice.

Now it is almost impossible to find a job unless you have a college degree or certification from a technical field. By obtaining the skills necessary for success in college, students are developing options for themselves that will allow them to experience the quality of life that they desire.
