This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Origami can awaken a child's mind to the beauty of art and the sense that they can be a part of creating beauty in a world in which beauty is often hard to find.
I am a school counselor at an elementary school in the New York City.
We have a total of 500 student, Pre-K through 3rd grade(growing to the 5th grade in the next two years) half of which are Special Education students. We are in an area where the children are exposed to violence, homelessness and hunger on a regular basis. The children all have great potential and spirit.
My Project
I want to start an origami club for the school. At this time I work with about 73 special needs student, who come to me each week for either individual or group counseling. I will start with them but will eventually like to reach out to all children. I want to have the children create beauty out of a simple piece of paper. Children need to know that they are capable of creating something that they can cherish, as well as others.
Children's self-esteem and awareness may be enhanced by using the arts.
Origami is an avenue to bring joy, raise self-esteem, and bring art into focus. Please help me in bringing origami to our school.
