Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 22 eager, active, and inquisitive 3rd graders. My students come from homes where parents have more than one job. The majority come from single parent family homes and some even share their home with relatives. I teach at a Title I school where all children receive free lunch.
My students are always eager to learn despite the fact that they have limited resources at home.
All my students are English Language Learners. They face many challenges in school and outside of school. Some even have to deal with the fact that they have several learning disabilities.
When my students come into my classroom I want them to feel successful. Whenever I can, and with the limited resources that I have available for them, I try to provide them with many hands-on experiences.
My Project
The listening center will make a difference in my students' learning because they have limited reading skills. Listening to stories will enrich their multi-sensory experiences. They enjoy being read to, and a listening center will provide a model of fluent reading.
Listening to books is a fun and enjoyable way for children to foster a love for reading.
With a listening center my students will be eager to read. Listening to books will help my students build vocabulary and focus on the sounds of the words. When students listen to a story, it also teaches them listening skills and helps students decode unfamiliar words. With a listening center my students will be able to listen to the same story multiple times which will have a significant impact on word recognition, fluency, and comprehension.
