My Students
Part of our district's mission is to assist students in becoming career and college ready. I'm no fortune teller, but it seems to me that fulfilling this mission will become increasingly more difficult without meaningful instruction in technology.
I teach 5th grade in a highly gifted magnet program.
My students are identified as having an IQ of 145 or above, and have the potential to be tomorrow's leaders. One third of my students are English Language Learners, demonstrating their brilliance despite a language barrier. Because of their highly gifted identification, I make every effort to differentiate their curriculum to best suit their diverse needs. They are exceptional, but not just because of their intellect. They are truly a joy to know and I feel incredibly fortunate to be their teacher.
My Project
These materials are essentially tiny circuit boards that allow students to explore science and technology in a multitude of safe, hands-on activities. While reinforcing basic scientific knowledge of electrical currents, these boards incorporate a whole new level of technology and help students understand how science is applied in their everyday activities.
In my class, students will use the circuit boards to create an interactive room, to design an apparatus that can make computer usage accessible to children who may not have full use of their hands, and to create new musical instruments. While these are the assignments I am prepared to give, I know they will not be the only products I see as a result of this donation. I am positive my students will take this tool to a new level and I will soon be writing curriculum based on their exploration, discoveries, and interests. That's the best possible outcome!
By donating to this project, you are supporting science, technology, collaboration, exploration, perseverance, creativity, and excitement in our classroom.
These things matter. It truly makes a difference in understanding when students are meaningfully engaged in their learning and see a real-world application for their lessons. I am so excited about the possibilities these materials represent, and I am very, very grateful for your consideration of our project.
