My Project
Our 5th grade students are heading to middle school next year and will be using lockers for the first time in their academic careers. Previous cohorts of 5th graders have expressed that their struggle to open the combination locks on their lockers was one of the biggest stressors during the first few months of middle school. In fact, a few students confessed that they simply stopped using their lockers altogether-leading to extremely full backpacks and very sore shoulders.
Our students already have enough to worry about when it comes to leaving elementary school and moving on to the next chapter in their lives-with your support, opening their lockers will not be one of them.
Our school counselor is preparing lessons to support our students' transition to middle school; which will cover understanding and following their class schedules, and of course, operating their lockers.
By giving students time to practice opening combination locks in a supportive and low-stress environment, our students will feel more confident next fall when trying to retrieve items from their lockers upon arrival, between classes, and after school.
More than half of students from low‑income households
