My students need a variety of books at a variety of levels so that they can read independently and feel successful, no matter what level of reader they are.
The students in my classroom come from rough homes and have worries that no child should have to bother with. But as soon as they step through our classroom door they transform into a student who can't get enough of what I am teaching them!
I teach first grade in a Title I school in Tennessee.
Our school has worked hard to go from a failing school to one of the top schools in Tennessee. We are so proud of how far the students have come during this time! One of the biggest transformations in our school has been the culture. We have created a culture of students who love to read. It is rare to see a student without a book tucked under their arm and they love to share new and exciting plots that they are reading with anyone who will listen. Even though we have such a wonderful culture within the doors of our school. The students have many issues that they deal with once they leave school. That is why I have tried to create a safe, loving learning environment in which every student can be successful. The students within my room love to learn and love to read and will hopefully take the knowledge they acquire to do great things in their lives!
My Project
Although I have many books in my classroom, I do not have books from different levels. I have many books that are very easy and many books that are difficult. But I don't have enough books to hit the students who are in the middle! Receiving these sets of books would allow students in my classroom to read books at a level that is appropriate for them and will help them feel successful and confident in their reading.
The students in my classroom have a way out of the difficult lives that they are living now - and that way out is through education.
