Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If books are nicely organized and if the groups of books are set out carefully with space around them, then it's easier to take the books in, and decide which ones to read.
Calling all book lovers!
As you probably know, studies have shown that the more students read, the better they do in school. Students must be provided with literacy-rich environments in order to accomplish this.
I work in a wonderfully diverse school. Our demographics are 1/3 White, 1/3 Latino and 1/3 African American. We are also a school that has many families that are economically challenged. Many don't have access to books their kids can read at home so I encourage many students to take my books home to read as I am trying to instill "the fever" for reading in them as I know this is going to give them access to the knowledge they will need to open doors in the future.
Imagine walking into your local bookstore being surrounded by wonderfully organized books, special areas where new books are highlighted and book covers facing you calling you to check the books out. This is what I want my kids to experience in my classroom library.
My Project
I believe a classroom library is the heartbeat of a teacher's environment. It is the window into an educator's own personality, and it reflects the importance of literacy in the classroom. I believe every teacher -- no matter what subject he or she teaches -- should have one.
Kids will eat books up if you make them convenient. I plan to do this by using these shelves to create an organized variety of genres and topics available. I want to organize the books in bins that match the genre. I will also put books on display. I plan to put several books in a magazine rack display. This will allow the cover of the books to catch students' eyes. It is how the advertisers do it in the checkout at the grocery store. It works for kids, too. Keep it fresh by frequently changing the books that get their covers displayed.
From personal experience, I have to say that making sure each student has a book to read during independent reading is extraordinarily important.
But, it HAS to be a book that they are truly interested in reading--if not, they will be merely pretending to read, or worse, creating chaos in your classroom. With easier access to engaging books my students will develop the habit of reading that will hopefully linger beyond their life in school.
