My Students

The variety of students I teach ranges across a huge spectrum. I work in a school that has about 40% bilingual or ESL learners. I have the privilege of being challenged to work with students who know English as their second language, inclusion learners, rough home lives, average students, and students that exceed ability. Having a successful learning experience for a whole group means using multiple measures of instruction including art, technology, videos, manipulatives, and projects.

These kids are great, and every day I try to find ways to excite their learning and get them engaged.

The students in my classroom are always willing to assist, help, and discuss their findings as a group.

My Project

I would love to try and explore the meaning a challenging word problem with students in a more colorful and comfortable setting. I feel this will take away some anxiety of not feeling like they are being quizzed or tested, but rather have a way to express what they think about a question among their peers without judgement. I think my kids would benefit from being able to grab a mat and create a circle in the classroom, library, or even in our school yard on a nice day. Then, using the journals and colored pencils to make their mathematical reasoning stand out.

The journals will be kept in the classroom for students to grab and reflect on when they have extra time in class.

This will let the students in different classes be able to see how another group solved the same exact question they did. I would step back and walk around while listening to the students reasoning and how they model their thinking. I truly feel the students can learn from teaching each other and being comfortable with being wrong because of the setting created.
