Help me give my students Scholastic magazines to read in class that will allow them to be informed and knowledgeable citizens. The magazine will assist in cultivating deep discussions about current events and happenings in the world.
Teachers at my school observe students daily that seek to celebrate their uniqueness in our small community. Many have come from broken homes and tragic circumstances while others hail from privileged neighborhoods. My high school students have aspirations for their future but because they are striving forth sometimes with distinct visions and dreams, they are unsure of their paths. The smallness of our town doesn't allow for a broad vision of what is out in the world for them to accomplish or achieve especially with over half of our students coming from impoverished homes.
Bono said, "To be one, to be united, is a great thing, but to respect the right to be different is perhaps even greater." High school life can sometimes be the place where students determine their worth based on what is around them.
My goal as a teacher is to develop relationships that foster individuality and self-awareness. Celebrating, showcasing, and valuing diversity is an important aspect of this. I would like to introduce my students to a variety of role models and characters with which they can align themselves. In return, I hope to demonstrate that uniqueness is something to be valued.
My Project
As a teacher in a small town, I sometimes feel that my students do not realize the issues that exist in other parts of the country. Many of them only get news through social media and sometimes this can be strictly local news will limited viewpoints. I am asking for this Scholastic magazine that will allow students to read and discuss the U.S. and World news as it impacts them.
Vocabulary knowledge is an excellent indicator of reading success and by reading informational material such as Scholastic's Upfront magazine I feel that my students will make essential improvements in literacy and word acquisition.
Learning will continue through writing projects that will allow my students to analyze various perspectives from the news, complete additional research, and publish their thoughts. My goal is to promote student involvement by getting students to evaluate and understand current issues.
