This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an amazing group of students in Los Angeles. Despite the challenges they face in a low-income community, they are passionate about learning and storytelling. Their creativity and enthusiasm inspire me every day, even though they often have limited resources.

The class sets of novels I'm requesting will be key to our unit on the hero’s journey, a universal story structure that resonates with my students.

These books will help them improve their reading comprehension, analytical skills, and ability to connect emotionally with characters. Beyond reading, they’ll use the hero’s journey as a blueprint for their own creative writing, allowing them to craft stories that reflect their own lives and challenges.

My goal is to deepen my students’ understanding of literature while empowering them to see themselves as the heroes of their own stories. This project will foster both academic success and personal growth by showing them that their voices and stories matter.

What makes my students special is their resilience and determination. They are eager to learn and embrace every opportunity to grow, despite not having access to books at home. With these novels, they will not only gain valuable academic skills but also develop a lifelong love for reading and writing.
