This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading comprehension and fluency is used in every aspect of our daily lives and having the tools such as a leveled library and online reading resources like reading A to Z, scholastic and Raz kids would benefit my students throughout their academic journey with me. I teach in a multi grade 6-8 self contained specialized inner city school in NY with very limited resources for books and technology. 1 teacher and 1 paraprofessional. I teach six 7th graders and six 8th graders all of which have Autism most of them take the state test in ELA every year. . All of the students are on various reading levels from level A to level Z. They all learn in different ways (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners) and need books on their levels that they can use for independent reading comprehension and fluency practice. For the past couple of years I have been trying to buy books that cover the reading levels of my various students and that are interesting enough that they will want to continue growing their love for reading and more importantly improving their reading comprehension and fluency.
My Project
With the leveled library and the online reading resources the students could and will definitely become more comfortable in reading high interest stories on their reading levels. The students reading levels will go up and their fluency will increase. In class with the needed resources as the teacher I will be able to generate more guided reading lessons that meet the students where they are that will be more relevant towards meeting their needs. In class the students would get more options for reading ( i.e. they will be able to pick whether or not they would like to read from the library or work on a computer reading program). Having both resources if possible would provide me with a wider range of reading passages to use with my students. Also the students will grow in their love for reading.
