My students live in a small resort community. They come from big cities and small towns, but have all ended up in the same place. Many of them have never been outside of our small town.
My students love to read about the rest of the world.
They love the beach, and all the nature surrounding them. We live in a beautiful coastal town that most people just get to visit.
My students come from a variety of family types. Their guardians consist of older siblings, single-parents, two-parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents.
The Storyworks magazines will enhance the print-rich environment that I strive to create. Informational text is lacking in our reading curriculum. These magazines will help fill that void with quality, interesting, relevant articles. The students look forward to each new edition. They eagerly open it, looking for the fun questions and contests, the jokes, and titles of their upcoming reading.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their reading and less disruptive of their peers when they are reading text that is current, fun, and interesting.
In addition, the supplemental materials are aligned with Common Core Standards. The questions and activities provided encourage critical thinking and writing opportunities. The kiddos learn by having fun, and truly enjoy reading.
