My students attend a STEM Magnet school with an environmental focus. They are creative and inquisitive. They are interested in learning about the world around them. They want to champion causes. They want to see and use technology in ways that can support them as 21st Century Learners. They love challenges that involve critical thinking, problem-solving, and at the same time: Movement! They need opportunities for hands-on learning and projects that engage their minds.
STEM Education requires hands-on materials for engaging learning.
Hands-on materials need maintaining and replacing in order to allow students opportunities to manipulate, move, and engineer with projects. My students enjoy the process of engineering new designs and thinking about new ways to explore old concepts. They require materials that support this type of learning.
My Project
These items support on going projects in our classroom throughout the school year. We do a major learning project with magnets that needs updated. Our water cycle projects will be enhanced with the model and will allow students a deeper understanding of the water cycle and how it interacts with our world. We do a hydroponic garden to observe and explore plant needs. We have used materials several times and some of the materials we are using are limited in their effectiveness for the project. Purchasing materials like the mesh cups and the Rockwool starter plugs will increase the effectiveness of the project. Our class aquarium is in need of additional plant and fish life as we had a major disaster when the thermometer went out over our holiday break.
Students would be over joyed to have a new group of friends again in our tank in addition to the other materials to update our ongoing projects.
STEM education requires resources to continue to make it engaging and worthwhile!
