One World: Many Perspectives

My students need a laptop computer and printer/scanner to tie in with our Smart-board, a teaching globe for social studies, and bouncy bands to help students focus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For my students, the only world they know is their neighborhood. When we read about the rainforests in Guyana or even the early settlers of New York and their journey across the Atlantic, the students aren't able visualize or really synthesize this information, because it is so abstract for them.

My students are in a Fourth/Fifth grade, self-contained, special education classroom in a high poverty neighborhood in the South Bronx.

The students have been classified learning disabled, speech impaired, or emotionally disturbed. Many of the students are English Language Learners, and all are performing several years below grade level in all subject areas. While the students and the school face many of the challenges that seem to come with a high poverty neighborhood, the students are happy, motivated, and the school does a great job, under the circumstances, creating a safe, comfortable haven in the midst of periodic violence and chaos.

My Project

The students would use the laptop to tie in with our classroom Smartboard allowing lessons to become interactive and to enable much more use of online resources such as math games, research websites, and streaming video to give real-life examples of academic content. The printer/scanner would allow students to print research to create meaningful and informative infographics (part of the fourth grade writing curriculum) and to add interest to research essays. The globe would be used as a hands-on tool in social studies and other subject areas to explore the world and our place on it. Using the flat maps contained in books often doesn't give students the perspective needed to understand how we tie in with the surrounding area and the world so the globe will provide a tactile piece to the curriculum. Finally, the desk bands will help calm students who have difficulty sitting still and will allow them to more fully participate in lessons and activities.

I would like to use these donations to take students on a learning journey beyond the classroom.

Through technology and hands-on materials, I would like the students to gain new perspective on the world around them and their place in it.
