My Students
As a teacher in a small rural school, my number one goal has always been to bring as much science and technology into the lives of my students as humanly possible. There have been rapid shifts in educational paradigms recently and science is at the forefront of these changes. Days of sitting in a desk memorizing texts and vocab are gone.
The name of the game now is STEM, creativity and hands on learning.
Even though we are a small school, far removed from hustle and bustle of city life, does not mean we can not be on the bleeding edge of science and technology. Building a science lab from the ground up is challenging prospect but will be worth it if we can create new generations engineers and scientists.
My Project
The classic rocketry project has been a staple for many years, and for good reason. This is the kind of project students will remember for the rest of their lives. Rockets highlight everything that is amazing about STEM. They are excited, hands-on and deliver on a practical application for ideas learned and developed in the classroom.
The best teachers can make anything exciting but it does not take Bill Nye to grab student's attention with a rocket project.
Creativity and ingenuity in the classroom are now the name of the game. As the students progress through their own journey of discovery and enlightenment, the rockets provide the vehicle, both metaphorically and physically, for higher level learning to take place.
