One, Two, Three- I Need Math I Can See

My students need an equivalence kit, a fraction kit and a geometry kit.

My Students

My students need math they can see, touch and manipulate. Pencils, paper, worksheets and texts just aren't enough. When they can pour one-fourth of a cup of pinto beans into a measuring cup, then add a second one-fourth cup and see that they now have one-half, well, that makes sense to them.

My student population consists of students who have been designated as having a learning disability or regular education students who are at least one year behind their peers and require intervention in small groups.

This year, they range from grades two through eight. Over 70% receive either free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Our school is located in a rural community with virtually no resources. In our tiny little town, there is one church, a post office, and the school. That's it! These are great young people who really need a little extra to help them conquer required math skills.

My Project

I am requesting three math kits and a fraction bingo game. The fraction kit will provide many hands-on objects to help my students understand all the basics of fractions. They will be able to see, for themselves, why one-half is bigger than one-eighth, even though on paper one would think just the opposite because eight is a larger number than two. The fraction game can be used to reinforce the concepts they have learned in a fun way. They can manipulate the pieces in the Geometry Kit to understand triangle congruence, surface area and volume, plus be able to "see" the various geometric concepts. Changing fractions to decimals and/or percents is also difficult for my students to grasp. The Equivalence Kit will help them make those changes in a manner in which they understand and makes sense to them.

My students try their best, but math just doesn't come easy to them.

These math kits will open the door and open their eyes and minds to some very difficult concepts. Plus, they will enjoy math much more and as the "light comes on", their self-esteem will rise as will their grades. Please think about helping my students. Thank you.
