There is much more to fluency than speed -- how many words per minute a child can read. It takes more than speed to do justice to fluency. Dr. Tim Rasinski of Kent State University suggests that fluency is critically connected with how readers deal with print and gain meaning from it. One of the best classroom practices for improving fluency is the reader's theater/repeated reading combination. Reader's theater is an opportunity for students to practice and reread nursery rhymes, oratory, songs, monologues, dialogue, or scripts throughout the week, and then perform them at the end of the week. I am a Reading Coach in a low performing, low socio-economic inner-city school. I work with students in grades K-3. The number of students in each grade ranges between 10 and 25. I would like to use Reader's Theater Program with my students in grades 1-2 (approximately 45 students). This program has multileveled scripts, which allow students of different abilities to work together. The students will: build oral reading fluency and expression, develop silent reading and tracking skills, improve listening skills, and learn academic vocabulary and content. The complete kit, levels F-M for grades 1-2, includes 408 scripts (6 each of 28 titles; 12 each of 20 titles). Research studies indicate that 93% of the at-risk students exited reading at or above grade level with Reader's Theater added to a core-reading program. 22% of the at-risk students using a core program alone exited successfully. Maybe one day, one or more of my at-risk students, will become a television or film actor and it will be due to your generous contribution.
