This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember standing in the jump rope line waiting for your turn just so you could beat Beth. She jumped 43 times and you knew you could get to 50. All along your teacher was on the sidelines encouraging this friendly competition. Her secret agenda was that she had you practicing math.
I work with an energetic bunch of kids who are not aware of all the challenges they face.
Aside from being in a high-poverty school where the majority of the kids receive free or reduced lunch, many of them live in apartments. Some of our students are living in apartments that house two or even three families. In addition, the apartment complexes are right next to each other and provide very little space for the kids to play. For a lot of our kids, the exercise they get at school is all they'll get for the day.
My Project
We need a rainbow parachute, hoops, balls, counting games, and ring toss games to practice their colors, numbers and more. This will help my students reinforce math concepts while doing physical activities. With these resources I will fulfill several goals for my students: the students will be practicing math, learning English and getting a lot of exercise. The benefits for myself are that I will cover English, Math and P.E. standards while watching the kids enjoy themselves.
Some would say that I am going "old-school" by teaching my kids "Miss Mary Mack" but I feel my kids deserve more than the jungle-gym they share with 7 other classrooms, the two rubber balls and the two tricycles that we currently have.
The only scary thing is that I will have to use a hula-hoop in order to teach them how to use it!
