Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
All students deserve a chance to engage in learning through play. My colleagues and I work with students who have very limited mobility. Challenges such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, and traumatic brain injuries limit their access to physical materials and engagement in age-appropriate play activities.
Children learn through play.
Play is an important part of childhood and this project will help our students learn through play by providing them with activities that have been adapted for switch use. A switch is an adaptive device that allows people with limited movement to engage with and use electronic devices. We are in need of a variety of high-interest electronic toys that have been adapted for switch use.
By using these high-interest switch-adapted toys, students can develop awareness of cause and effect and learn that they have control over things within their environment. Once they learn that control and autonomy are possible, our students will become more motivated and more likely to initiate engagement and actively participate in learning. This project will give our students the chance to learn through play.
