Help me give my students the Spanish experience of Island of the Blue Dolphins (La isla de los delfines azules). I have read this aloud in the past and 5th graders love it!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a group of very active fifth graders. They love to dance, play video games, listen to music, and engage in math and reading games online. I love that my students have grown to respect each other and feel compassion as a class. I encourage my students to be life-long learners and avid readers.
My classroom is a dual language immersion class with a 50/50 model in English and Spanish.
My classroom will have to include both an English and a Spanish library. My students will be reading in both languages equally, but we struggle to find authentic books in Spanish.
My Project
I have been reading Island of the Blue Dolphins with my students. They love the suspense and conflict. Their natural instinct for survival kicks in. Many students have asked me for a physical copy of the book to read along with me. Unfortunately, there are not many copies in Spanish available at our school.
We are excited to read together!
We are in a Dual Language program where we learn English and Spanish equally. My students enjoy reading the same book as a whole class because we get to discuss, speculate, predict, and even create our own spin off stories from the same book. It is so much more meaningful when we get to share a chapter book and talk about it. We say its like watching the same show on Netflix, then coming to school to talk to our friends about it.
With one-on-one ratio of books to students. We will all be able to independently reread the story, then come together as a whole class and discuss. We can also read together in the classroom and share our reading aloud, either in small groups or as a whole class. This is much more exciting than reading alone. I want to show my students that reading doesn't have to be "lonely", it can also be shared and discussed just like talking about the Cobra Kai show from Netflix!
