Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our goal is to create a meaningful shared literary experience for our students, faculty, and staff by embarking on a schoolwide read-aloud to kick off the new school year. We have selected the acclaimed middle-grade novel "Refugee" by Alan Gratz for our one school, one book initiative because its themes of perseverance, courage, hope and family are relatable to our students; our school is located in one of the most historic neighborhoods in our city, where cultural identity, strong familial ties, and personal resilience are shaped by the complexities of life in a borderland community.

We want to put a copy of the book in the hands of every student, faculty, and staff member on campus, so our entire school community can read, discuss, and celebrate one incredible story together, united around literacy and the power of a good book!

Thanks to the dedicated support of our incredible teachers, our students continue to make impressive gains academically, and this project will keep the momentum and interest in reading going strong as we begin a new school year.
