Can you imagine seeing the ocean floor on Google Earth for the first time? Or seeing videos of lions and bacteria? A computer enhances science learning and allows my K-5 students to explore their universe in a meaningful, lasting way.
My science students attend a Title I school where funds for science technology are non-existent.
My students are diverse in cultures, as well as learning styles. Behavior management is very much linked to engaging hands-on science activities that teach deductive reasoning and basic science concepts. Students demonstrate their drive to learn by coming early to my science classroom and show up after school for extra instruction. They are eager intelligent children who desperately need technology to learn science and hone reading and math skills!
My Project
My science students range from grades K-5 and include General Education, Special Education, and English Language Learners (ELL). All students learn science better when given tactile manipulative hands-on materials. Computers allow me to extend that experience with activities and challenges. This Dell Inspiron will allow me to differentiate each science class and accommodate all student learning needs. It will be set up so students will work independently or in small groups to do Internet research and exploration for class and projects. In addition, this computer will allow me to project to the SMARTBoard for whole group instruction.
More importantly, the use of this computer will strengthen the students' science content necessary for passing the two 4th grade science tests and build basic science knowledge to all the little ones in K through 3.
Understanding our universe is important for my children, who rarely see past their concrete, gray neighborhoods.
Technology provides portals to a myriad of sites and empowers children to learn. It can fuel science career interests, too! This laptop will provide support for individual, small group, and classroom learning. Nothing beats the surprised and delighted expressions when discovery happens. Your generous support will make a scientific difference!
