My students need 10 sets of books at their various reading levels to check out and read at home each night.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The same way of doing things reaps the same results. In order for children to want to read, we need to foster their love of reading. I can't remember a time when I was not excited to read. Books were everywhere. Books are NOT everywhere for my students.
Each year 26 smiling 6 year old faces arrive in my classroom.
They come from many backgrounds speaking many different languages. Our school is a dual language school located in the suburbs of a large city where families struggle to provide the necessities of life. Many live in apartments with large extended families and our population of homeless students grows each year. Regardless of their home life these children come to me with a smile in their eyes and an eagerness to learn.
My Project
So many of my students do not have low level books at home to read at night. The books that I have selected were chosen to support beginning level readers build good reading habits. I wish that I could say that these are all the books that I will need need to ensure that my students are lifelong readers, but we all know that the more we read, the more we want to read and One size does not fit all. Some students like fiction books, some non fiction. Some like books about animals some like books about robots. I want to develop an enjoyment for reading by offering a wide selection of books. If we must do homework, lets make it enjoyable. If it is too difficult we will avoid doing it or not do it at all. For my students going to the public library every night is not an option nor can they get the reading experience they need by checking out a book a week from our school library. Books must be available EVERYDAY. Reading is a window to the world. Please help me open that window!
Research says that if a child reads 20 minutes each night they will perform better in school.
Each year I see students slowly lose the smile from their eyes as they struggle to read and begin falling behind. As Orville Prescott said "Few Children learn to love books by themselves. Someone has to lure them into the wonderful world of the written word: someone has to show them the way".
