This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A traditional school setting doesn't work for all 3rd graders all of the time.
My 3rd graders love to actively learn.
Unfortunately, strict mandates mean students need to do more reading, writing, and math than ever before. My students get weekly gym class and daily recess, which equals about 40 minutes a day of movement. That means 6 hours and 20 minutes of classroom work. While I get them moving as much as possible, there are students who need other ways to sit and work throughout the day.
My Project
My classroom has 2 small tables students can decide to go and work at when they can't concentrate, are struggling to work with their peers, or just need to move. These alternative seats will be used at these small tables. All students can leave their seat and use these tables and seats as needed. Students who struggle to focus or who have an Individualized Education Plan will be encouraged to use them by the teacher.
These alternative chairs will give more choice to my students who need different ways to learn.
More and more we're finding that not all students learn the same way. The traditional and once accepted practice of sitting, facing the front, and focusing only on the teacher doesn't meet the needs of our students today. My students need options for moving and sitting while they're learning and trying to meet all of the rigorous demands of education.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
