Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title I, low poverty, public school that often struggles with resources to provide the best atmosphere for its students. There are a variety of levels and needs in one classroom, including English Language Learners and Special Needs Students. Over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch programs, and they come from homes that are struggling to make ends meet. For many of my students, school is their "safe place", and they eagerly make their way to school everyday.

As an educator, I'd love the opportunity to provide an atmosphere that feels like "home" to them, and helps them to forget that they are homeless, hungry, and less fortunate.

Some of my students sleep on the floor of crowded apartments or come from homeless shelters, and I want my classroom to be the place where they can break down walls, and share their zest for learning in a comfortable, safe, and loving environment.

My Project

Middle school classrooms are often bland, impersonal, and generic. Students are often seated in rows with desks that are attached to a chair, leaving little room to collaborate or share. The reality for our students is that we are moving into 21st Century learning, and their learning environment needs to mimic this. Times are changing and technology is a big deal. Often, the only technology my students have access to is what is provided in the classroom. The use of the The Surf Portable Lap Desk/Laptop Stand/Floor Chairs, stools, and assorted pillows, will help my students attend to tasks and focus. I want my classroom to be filled with the ambiance of success, independence, and motivation, where a student of any race, gender, learning difficulty, financial situation, etc. is able to learn successfully.

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them.

Flexible seating will allow my students to be engaged in lessons and will provide an atmosphere where they feel comforted, motivated and at home. Any student will be able to walk in, sit down in a variety of seating forums and not be afraid to share, consult and evaluate.
