My Students
Welcome to our school! We're a diverse bunch, but what's evident is that we are a community. We are a neighborhood school with about 80% of students walking to or being dropped off at school by a guardian. We are a high poverty school, but these students are motivated to learn and want be engaged in their learning.
Being an inclusive school, our school is full of students with diverse abilities, integrating both general and special education in one room.
These students have differing skills, but one thing they have in common is a love for learning.
These students are energetic and enthusiastic! Unfortunately, many of them are missing basic academic skills in the areas of literacy, math, and writing. This year we are focusing on closing the achievement gap and creating a school full of confident, successful students.
My Project
Distance learning is difficult. Not only are students learning in an unfamiliar way, they are missing out on the social and emotional connections that in person learning provides. So, why choose to read one book as a school?
To build a sense of community and togetherness during this time apart, our school wants to do a whole school reading of one book.
Each classroom from kindergarten to 5th grade would read Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. In the primary grades this would be accomplished as a read aloud. Read alouds help students learn to listen, build bigger vocabularies, learn about text and story structure, and build a culture of learning. In the intermediate grades, students would independently read the text in concert with support in analysis from their teacher. When we return to in person learning, the students will all have this shared experience. It will be talking point where all students can relate to each other as well as the adults in the building. Help us build community even when we can't be together!
