Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want what we all do, a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world. They come to me from over twenty countries, speaking a dozen languages. On the first day of school, when my students are in a new classroom, with a new teacher, speaking a language that is new to them, it's understandable they're a bit anxious. That first day, it's tough to communicate, and the room is awfully quiet.

It is so important in that first day to set the tone that not only are they welcome, but that I want them to have the tools to succeed.

My Project

Most of my students' families fall below the poverty line. Many are on public assistance; many others are barely surviving. Yet, my students are expected to meet the same educational standards as more affluent students of New York. My proposal is in the first week of school to provide all of my students with a pencil pouch containing all of the basic supplies they need to complete their classwork and lab assignments. Items like pencils, pens, glue sticks, and tissues that are always in demand will now be close at hand, and everyone will have them.

With all the difficulties in their lives, often students lose or forget to bring in supplies.

Some simply cannot afford to purchase the needed supplies. Your act of kindness and generosity will go a long way in eliminating this obstacle to the learning process and will be remembered by our students. Students will also know that there are people in their community who care about them and their education.

Your act of kindness will have a long-lasting impact on our students. Please help me help those most in need while we make learning fun and engaging. Thank you for your generosity.
