One More Modern Tool for Modern Science Students!

My students need an iPad to increase understanding of physical science and integrate technology on a daily basis right in our classroom!

My Students

My modern eighth graders are surrounded by cell phones, video game systems, and all forms of digital media. They are immersed in technology...until they arrive at school! My students need technology integrated into their science class on a regular basis.

My school is "stuck in the middle." Being a "moderate poverty" school, we do not receive the funding and technology provided to poorer schools, yet do not have the parent donor base of affluent schools.

As a magnet school, we serve students from throughout the district, encompassing a wide range of home languages, academic proficiency, and socio-economic levels. We are a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students, including those with special needs, gifted, and English learners. My colleagues and I have developed a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum, constructed on a foundation of hands-on learning and real-world application. I employ a program of varied activities and instructional strategies to both motivate and teach my students. We use lots of traditional lab equipment and I assign projects using household materials. What we are missing is the technology component of STEM, as well as the money needed to acquire it!

My Project

With iPads, students can work in pairs to engage in activities on a daily basis right in science class, instead of waiting for a special trip to the computer lab! Following the California State Physical Science Standards, we frequently study concepts which cannot be directly observed. We are currently studying basic chemistry. After the winter break we will begin physics. Interactive science simulations of a skate park, roller coaster, Olympic athletes, buoyancy, and falling objects will allow my classes to investigate the nature and laws of motion (8.1) and forces (8.2). Using the internet, students can interact with models of concepts we discuss, manipulate animations, keep journals, do research, evaluate and share information, consult with scientists and explore STEM careers! I have selected an iPad 2 this time because there are a few things students will be able to do with it that they could not otherwise do, such as show certain apps to the class during presentations.

By not having enough computer access, my students are missing a vital component of future success!

Only with a solid conceptual science foundation and familiarity with technology will they be prepared to pursue higher education, succeed in modern jobs and participate in the applications of scientific advances as informed citizens. Using iPads in Science class will give my students valuable experience. iPads are intuitive to use, have great apps and are easy to store and use at classroom tables!
