With 85% of our kids living in poverty, access to engaging literacy programs is limited. We need to offer engaging ways for learners to connect to literacy and math.
In some schools, children begin kindergarten already knowing letters names, sounds, and numbers.
Many of our students haven't had the luxury of getting a head start. So they hit the ground running. We have five full day K classes at our school. With all our efforts, by the end of kindergarten, more than 95% of our K learners meet state standards!
My Project
"Now I get it" is what kids say in classes that have a document camera that projects [from a COMPUTER] captivating images and video clips on the big screen. I have four PCs in the class for readers and mathematicians to practice and improve her or his skills, but not one for projecting programs for use as a whole class. Other educators use the projector and computer to flash sight words to make comprehension more automatic and quick math images to improve efficiency. We have limited space in our room, so having a laptop would save space and be just what we need to have the technology that will spice up our lessons!
Who knows, with the technology we need to make what we do have in class more effective, we could go from meeting state standards to EXCEEDING them!
Our learners are scholars. They have an insatiable need for knowledge. However, when they are not given a variety of ways to experience learning, it makes connecting to the lessons a struggle for many. Thank you very much for your interest in our project :)
