I need to build my knowledge of connecting modern literature to the required classics in my curriculum!

My Students

Mr. Stefanelli's students enter a reading haven every day. During the first 20 minutes of class, my students enjoy the time to read. During this time, they read what interests them, they relax, they forget what's going on at home, they forget (dare I say) their other classes and responsibilities.

My students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, devour books!

They are discouraged from looking at a study guide; they are discouraged from having a pen in their hand. Reading needs to be enjoyable. My students enjoy it because it's for them - and no one else.

My students love this time. Many read a book a week! They take pride in their reading and their ability to encourage others in the class to read what they read.

My Project

As I continue to encourage Choice Reading in my classroom, I would like to build more knowledge on how to help students make connections between modern literature and the "classics." While I do believe there is too much emphasis on "literary classics," I still respect the need for students to be exposed to the books that opened the doors for modern authors to write, create, and build.

Modern authors stand on the shoulders of geniuses like Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, and Hemingway; I want to help students understand why!

My goal for this year is to find ways to show students the connections between the classic works and the books they devour on the YA Shelf!

Through these connections between writers, I will help my students become stronger writers by also building comfort and familiarity with the style of writers whom they should emulate!
